"Study of Values"
To rug hook realistic objects or scenes, it is helpful if we understand
and see values in our every day life.

Let us complete a creative exercise on values.

"Scale of 8 Grays"

1.  In the grey scale above you are shown values from
light to dark.  Now you put an object or objects with a strong
light shinning from the left on the subject.  Example: a telephone or
flowers in a vase.

2.  Next you put the lights out and draw in a grey scale the subject.
Take your time and really look to see the different values.

3.  Do this as a practice exercise in the garden, on the trees, or anywhere the light shines. Studying values is the same as learning to see all over again.

"6 Value Swatch of Spice Brown"

4.  Our swatches run in value from light to dark.  Great for shading and creating form.

Example: Take a tree trunk.  If the light source is coming from the left, the lightest value of the trunk will be on the left of the trunk and will
gradually work its value range to a darker value. In this way the trunk will look round instead of flat.

5.  In our newsletters we will constantly be relating to values to increase your awareness of the different effects of light. Enjoy.
