Exciting Shadows

The shadow of a form falling on another surface
is the cast shadow.
The cast shadow is shaped like the object itself,
but should be narrowed because it is lying down
flat and is seen in perspective.

To make the object sit down try making
the value directly beneath the object very
dark and gradually go to a lighter value.

Think blues and purples or a mix of both
colors for the cast shadows as they are
cold colors.

A dash of the objects complimentary color
in the shadows adds excitement.

Example of Dyeing for Cast Shadows

Cast shadows in nature are the longest
in the morning due to the raising sun.

As the sun goes down, the cast shadows
are again longer  at dusk.

In your still life pictorials use a strong
light source for a dramatic exciting
effect.
