Today we shall take a study on "simplicity" and "form" from this charming painting by
Van Gogh.
Many of us find that a pictorial is more peaceful when created in a simplistic way. It
gives the viewer a rest; a sense of ease and calmness.
Now let us take a closer look at "La Berceuse".
The artist has captured Madame Roulin deep in thought. Notice the down cast eyes, the
lines of the mouth, the folded hands, the subdued green colors; they all portray stillness.
The form of Madame Roulin was created simply in outline strokes, just enough detail
to suggest the breasts and fullness of the body. Note the gentle color variations in the hair painted
in directional strokes creating form easily.
The colors of the dress are repeated in the wallpaper creating color harmony. The red
accents are the compliments to the green creating visual interest. The touch of yellow puts warmth
in the painting.
Can you see the repeated form throughout this portrait? See the roundness of the flowers,
Madame Roulin, even in the chair and the sleeves of her dress! What vision!
This is a good study for those of us who want to put figures in our work in a simple form.
We can also benefit from these color harmony theories, I'm sure Van Gogh won't mind! Remember to
repeat your form to create visual interest!
Have a great week.
