"Dyeing with Black Walnuts" by Newsletter Members

1.  Take 6 walnuts in their shells and simmer
in 4 quarts of water until the color starts
     to bleed.

2.  Remove and save the walnuts.

3.  Add 1 tablespoon of citric acid to the water
and stir well.  You can substitute 1/4 cup of
white vinegar for the citric acid.

4.  Add 1/2 yard of white/natural wool and simmer
30 minutes or until all the dye is absorbed.

The results with the "shells on" will be a lovely
     soft light caramel.

5.  Remove the shells from the nuts and repeat the
above procedure but scrunch the wool fabric.

This scrunching will create light highlights and
     a rich brown color.

NOTE:  This is also a great dye bath to reduce
the harsh colors of some wools.  The used
walnuts and the dye can be stored in the freezer.
