FA002_Ocean_Scene_Nova_Scotia.jpg.w300h241.jpg
Ocean Scene, Nova Scotia, Canada

"Ocean Scene"

This original pictorial was inspired by a photo taken at low tide.  It was a beautiful sunny day with the tide flowing out, leaving scalloped impressions in the sands.  The sun reflecting off the water was a painters' dream.  This piece was one of my first attempts at using fiber to create a pictorial.  "Ocean Scene" was done completely in recycled 100% wool.  A lot of blue plaid was used inside of the oval in the ocean and the sky.  This gave the setting within the frame a natural look, not pasted.  I added a satin rope for the final finishing enhancing the nautical theme.  The image size is 18.25" x 16".

Travel Home

"Travel Home"

The four seasons of Canada are beautiful, yes including our winter.  The sun sparkling on the snow is one of nature’s finest delights.  In this original pictorial, I tried to capture that “sparkle” with Christmas yarn that has a silver thread. The yellows and reds are chosen to put warmth into the picture.  The large floppy trees are used to guide the viewer’s eyes to the focal point of the couple coming home.  “Travel Home” was completely hooked in a variety of 2 ply yarns with the brown border being 3 ply. What a pleasure it is to go home!  The image size is 22” x 27”.

Mother with Lambs

"Mother with Lambs"

"Mother with Lambs" was a fun Folk Art Design that was hooked in a variety of wools, yarns, recycled plaids and fleece.  To add texture to the mother lamb, I used a fat loppy yarn,  For unity, the same yarn was used for the oval frame.  The sky and distant hills was done in wool strips, hand dyed.  The grasses was done in hand dyed yarns.  The black sheep was done with 3 ply 100% wool yarn.  The recycles are in the trees and foreground.  The fleece is in the sun.I liked the simplicity of my design.

Church in the Forest

"Church In The Forest"

A unique fiber art creation consisting of different values of blue wool, hand dyed in swatches from light to dark.  After these swatches were dry, they were hand painted with a paint brush in a variety of pearly whites to represent moon light on the trees and the more grayer colors for shade. As the hooking process begins, the swatches are cut on a fabric cutter in different sizes to create depth. For example, the closest tree to you, would be in the widest cut #8 and as the trees recede, the cut goes from a #6, to #5 and finally to a #4 cut. All wool yarns are used in the sky and foreground.   Novelty yarns were used to create the moon and the moons reflections.  This pictorial was inspired by scenes in Norway.

Spinning is the process of converting fibers into yarn and thread.  This pictorial represents spinning fleece between the finger and thumb using a simple spindle and whorl (a small wheel).
A slow and tedious task that lasted until the Industrial Revolution. Designed and hooked for "The Loyalists Celebrations", Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 2008.

Yellow Roses, Mat

"Yellow Roses"

"Yellow Roses" was designed as a primitive rug hooking mat.  The method used was "outline and fill" which is an excellent way for beginners to start rug hooking. The cut is #8 which is 1/4" wide and hooked with a primitive hook on quality burlap. The background was hooked from a recycled wool blue plaid skit. The inspiration for this design comes from my rose gardens which I treasure. Image Size: 32" x 18"

Quiet_Ripple.jpg
Quiet Ripple, Pictorial

"Quiet Ripple"

"Quiet Ripple" was inspired by a wonderful day spent with my brother Paul in early fall.  This piece of art consists of hand dyed wools and novelty yarns,  It was a real challenge to do the reflections in the water. This pictorial took over 1000 hours to complete. "Quiet Ripple" tells the story of  "Impressions of Jone's Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada."

The View from the Blanket, Pictorial

"View from the Blanket"

This original pictorial is a simple romantic theme in a seascape setting.  This young man and his blonde lady friend are looking out to sea under a full moon.  They are wrapped under the red blanket and sitting on a rock ledge.  Perhaps they are discussing their dreams of the future?  The sky was hooked in a dark blue plaid.  The moon consists of silver cord bought at Christmas time.  Where the horizon and sea meets it is very dark to create perspective in the night.  The waves are in a five value homemade swatch of sea green.  The foam from the waves is recycled wool and a few decorative pearls are added for highlights.  Most of the foreground is hand dyed values of mauve. The image size is 17” x 16".

Late Fall Garden,Pictorial

"Late Fall Garden"

"Late Fall Garden" was created from an image of my brother Sam's garden at the end of September.  This pictorial was hooked in 2 and 3 ply woolen yarns.  The red wine color is a boucle yarn used here to add additional textures.  The blues were introcued to cool down the pictorial.  The variety of purple colors was introduced to compliment the yellow gold of the trees.  The border is hooked in dark blue to create the frame.  "Late Fall Garden" completed size is 27.5" x 20".

Backyard_Impressions.jpg
Backyard Impressions, Pictorial

"Backyard Impressions"

The inspiration for "Background Impressions" was captured by my digital camera on a walk behind my country home in early October.  The flaming fall tree was simply gorgeous and not be ignored.  This pictorial was challenging, as the struggle for colour harmony was forever constant.  What colors to leave in or out was a serious question.  Hand dyed wools on a #4 cutter created the image.  The border was hooked with 100% wool, 3 ply yarn.  "Backyard Impressions" is just a peek at nature's beauty in the fall.  The image size is 22.5" x 29".

"The Racoon"

"The Racoon"  depicts the rascal of the forest behind my house.  He is very smart and mischiveous.  It was a challenge to hook this small picture in hand dyed wools and mohair.
